DDS Demolition carried out the demolition of a multi storey car park on the busy Abbey Road in London.
The project required additional measures to be put in place to limit and prevent noise and dust at source, meeting and exceeding the requirements of the Mayor of London's supplementary planning guidance (SPG). DDS assisted the client through the planning process due to the building being occupied by a number of small businesses, some of which opposed their eviction.
The car park was set in a particularly restrictive location, on a junction between 2 main roads and parallel to a live railway on the opposite side. The restrictions led to the development of a hybrid method of demolition, incorporating ‘top down’ to demolish down to a safe level with the structure fully encapsulated with scaffolding wrapped in protective screens. The roof mounted plant and machinery were removed from the structure once the structure was partially demolished and no longer encroached on the neighbouring infrastructures, deeming to practical for a more traditional high reach demolition method to progress. The project was precluded by extensive soft strip works and asbestos removals throughout. The works also required carefully coordinated NR approvals and notifications to operate machinery and demolish in proximity to the neighbouring railway.
Following the successful demolition, the demolition arising were crushed on site to 6F2 and stockpiled in agreed locations on site for the clients use in the subsequent development.
The project was completed successfully on time and within budget to the satisfaction of the client.
