Reconstructing clean water reservoirs

The South-East Water clean water reservoirs off Hermitage Lane in Maidstone served 6,000 homes as well as Maidstone Hospital before it was identified that they were sinking in 2020. The water supply to the area was re-routed at the time and emergency contingency plans to supply the area put in place.

Each of the two concrete surface reservoir tanks were seriously damaged; sinking into the ground, and with their roofs collapsing. DDS Demolition were originally asked by South-East Water for their costs to demolish the tanks. However, through detailed ground investigation, surveys and modelling, DDS Contracting working as the Principal Contractor, alongside Atkins Realis and South-East Water, developed a strategy that has led to us retaining and re-using 75% of the existing structures.

Of the two original tanks, half of one was unsalvageable. The eventual package of works carried out by DDS involved partial demolition but ultimately, focused on the reconstruction of the reinforced concrete storage tank to create two cells which will hold a total volume in excess of 9 million litres.

Atkins’ use of innovative geophysical techniques (such as ERT, subsurface and submarine drone surveys) delivered a collaborative digital twin, which informed decision-making in design, and has continued to save time and costs throughout construction.

The critical ongoing evaluation of the site conditions was possible through this digital twin, utilising a ducted telemetry network and further survey solutions installed both underground and within the structures themselves.

Infilling with foamed concrete to the depth of bedrock in some areas, together with pressure grouting through the tank bases to improve the subgrade, securing of the infrastructure, repairs to existing pipework assets, ground remediation and new drainage solutions, all in addition to the reconstruction of the reservoir tanks themselves.

These extensive and quite unique remedial works have been ongoing since November 2020. Partial water supply commenced in July 2023 and the full project completed, including both tanks in operation and ground fill around the tanks, finally, in August 2023.

The innovative, collaborative and cost-effective approach adopted has gained recognition and awarded an ‘Outstanding Achievement’ certificate in the 2023 Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure as well as winning the 2023 Utility Week Awards' category for Infrastructure Delivery.
