DDS Demolition undertook the second stage demolition of papermills 7, 8 and the Voith Plant following successful completion of the 1st phase papermill 1 paper machine.
The site was mainly comprised of concrete and steel structures as well as the plant. The works were carried out strategically incorporating; asbestos removal, preparation and removal of plant and equipment, demolition of the Voith plant and demolition of the PM 7 & 8 warehouse. The site works were sensitively coordinated around the clients continued use of the site. Carefully timed traffic management ensured continuation of client heavy goods deliveries and vehicle movements alongside the operations of the demolition and asbestos teams. Large scale asbestos removals were carried out within the works programme to each building. Significant, varied and bespoke dust suppression was required throughout due to the scale of asbestos quantities, the challenging locations, higher risk deteriorating conditions all within differing building structure types. The demolition methods deployed and risk profiles necessitated meticulous planning, engineering and pre-weakening works. Notably, the heavy equipment within the Voith plant and the papermill structures required specialist engineered pre-weakening to enable safe efficient demolition internally from the shell of the buildings (as pictured below).
All non-hazardous arisings were processed, recycled and crushed followed by grubbing up of slabs, backfilling of voids and providing a graded level.
