DDS Group undertook the full demolition and redevelopment of Sheerness Steel Mill, managed with an open book approach involving all divisions of DDS.
The turnkey solution delivered a streamlined and efficient path from contract award to completion, split into phases and packages of works.
DDS Demolition undertook the first 2 Phases simultaneously over a 3 year period. The main demolition scope comprised the services terminations and strip out and demolition of Lime Silos, Refractory Bay, Link Scrap, Baghouses and high level dust flues, the Melt Shop, Billet Rod and Bar and the removal of overhead cranes. Extensive pre-weakening was necessary across the site. The largest structure also required internal plant strip, breakout of its concrete mezzanines and pre-weakening of the 32m vertical steel outer frame ahead of the coordinated demolition. The close proximity to live environments and the presence of dust specified as hazardous waste, a variety of specialist and bespoke dust control measures were incorporated throughout the demolition, such as a temporary sea fed pumping station for sprayed water, large scale encapsulations, sealing of internal spaces, specialist vacuum, negative pressure enclosures and more.
DDS Environmental carried out asbestos removals and the controlled removal of designated hazardous waste such as Electric Art Furnace Dust (EAFD), including dust removal by special grade vacuum, cleaning and decontamination of baghouses and storage silos, with all dust being contained.
DDS Contracting provided multiple phased design & build packages comprising groundworks remediation, UKPN trenching and power distribution works, substation and HGV haul road construction, 60,000m2 surfacing, drainage installations and development of a site wide land drainage strategy.
