DDS Demolition undertook the demolition of a 12-storey office block and adjoining multi storey car park and hotel. Works required multiple phased demolitions working around asbestos removal and scaffold contractors within a restrictive fast paced programme.
The scope included isolation and termination of existing services, strip out, asbestos removals and demolition within secure hoarded exclusion zones down to ground slab level. Due to varying existing structure types, a variety of methods were employed. The RC concrete car park was scaffolded along two sides adjoining public interfaces and traditionally demolished using high reach excavators. Methods on other buildings on site ranged from high reach demolition, to top down demolition and further erection of protective scaffolding and Monarflex. On the taller office building DDS Demolition engineered a well-hole to be cut through each floor for vertical material movements to prevent overloading floor slabs and provide programme acceleration as requested by the client.
Based on problem solving and value engineering successes, the client extended our remit of works to include the Earthworks package which included site wide clearance, removal of obstructions and hardstanding’s, reduce level dig, CBR testing and the installation of piling platforms.
The site was in a busy public location, requiring operations conducted under a meticulous traffic management plan for logistical movements, pedestrian management, sequenced and phased in accordance with the works phasing. Furthermore, effective dust & vibration suppression were paramount. DDS Demolition hosted an open day at the site for the client, local representatives and press to attend in order to communicate on going programme progressions. In line with client objectives, over 98% of the waste arising from the demolition process was recycled
