DDS Group undertook the full demolition and redevelopment of Sheerness Steel Mill, managed with an open book approach involving all divisions of DDS Group.
The turnkey solution delivered a streamlined and efficient path from contract award to completion, split into phases and packages of works.
DDS Contracting provided multiple packages of structural works, civil engineering works and groundworks. The initial DDS Contracting packages ran alongside phase 2 of DDS Demolition’s extensive demolition works. Demolitions included multiple buildings across the site, lime silos, refractory bay, link bay span, baghouses, high level dust flues, the melt shop, removal of an overhead crane and demolition of billet rod and bar mills. DDS Contracting works linked to the demolition programme, providing a critical path from one programme to the next for the subsequent groundworks remediation package.
DDS Contracting initially carried out ground remediation works to the concrete yard, extensive UKPN trenching and substation construction as well as the design and build of roller compacted concrete haul roads suitable for HGVs. Above ground, DDS Contracting carried out structural alterations to convert a warehouse into a timber treatment facility. Extensive design input from DDS Contracting to develop the post demolition land remediation strategy led to the second phase of DDS Contracting works. Phase 2 comprised the remodelling and surface reconstruction of 60,000m2 yard areas. In house design input to develop a land drain strategy for low lying areas led to a further phase of works and invitation to join a civils framework for the port. Phase 3 comprised the installation of large bore land drain pipework, site wide surface water drainage enhancement, substation power distribution works, further UKPN trenching works and enhanced surfacing measures coupled with additional associated surface water drainage provisions.
