DDS Group were appointed by Dover District Council to safely deconstruct the structurally deteriorating buildings occupying Bench Street, Dover. Due to the site laying adjacent to the A20, the Port of Dover, and a multitude of live footpaths, disturbance mitigation was of significant importance. We exercised numerous proactive control measures including robust temporary works systems, and rigorous survey of the surrounding areas, to ensure the project was conducted in the most controlled manner.
Alongside the demolition works required within the scope, conducted in a traditional mechanical manner, DDS Group were also challenged with the removal and salvage of the Banksy mural occupying the former ‘Castle Amusements’. Through bespoke timber temporary support design and installation, and employment of a meticulous manual methodology – avoiding vibration emission -, the mural was successfully extracted from the wall, in sections, and transported to a climate-controlled facility for restoration and preservation.
